Purpose
Employees rarely save for retirement the same way. One person defers a fixed $200 per paycheck to their 401(k) while another defers 5% of pay. UZIO supports multiple deduction methods for pension benefits (such as 401(k)) on a single company-level deduction or contribution. You set the deduction up once at the company level, then override the method (fixed or percentage) for each employee who needs something different. You do not need a second company-level deduction for the same plan.
Who can do this: Any user whose role includes the Payroll permission. This is usually the Employer Admin, but other admin roles can be granted the same access.
Prerequisites
- The pension deduction (and any linked company contribution, such as an employer match) already exists at the company level.
- The employee's payroll setup is complete. See Setting Up Employee Payroll.
Which deductions and contributions are pension-eligible
The Override at Employee Level checkbox appears only for types UZIO treats as pensionable: 401(k), Roth 401(k), 403(b), Roth 403(b), 457(b), Roth 457(b), 401(k) Simple, 408(p) Simple IRA, and Roth IRA. Section 125 benefits (medical, dental, vision), HSA, FSA, DCAP, and "Other" deductions are not pension-eligible and never show this override. Their method is set once at the company level for everyone.
Where the override lives
The override is part of the employee's deduction and contribution setup on their payroll record, not the company-level form. When you assign or edit the pension deduction or contribution for an individual employee, tick Override at Employee Level, then choose the calculation method and amount for that employee only:
- Deductions: Fixed $, % of Gross Pay, or % of Disposable Net Pay.
- Contributions: Fixed $, % of Gross Pay, % of Net Pay, or Formula.
The company-level deduction keeps its own default method. Your override applies to that one employee and does not affect anyone else assigned to the same deduction.

Tip: Linked pension contributions (for example, a 401(k) match) can be overridden per employee too. The value, method, limits, and formula tiers are all adjustable at the employee level. See Setting Up Company Level Contributions.
Common mistake: Creating a second company-level deduction ("401k - Fixed" and "401k - Percent") just to support both methods. This splits your reporting and doubles your maintenance. Use one deduction and override the method on each employee instead.
Employer match prompts when you assign or change a retirement deduction
When a retirement deduction has a linked employer match, UZIO checks the match each time you save the employee's deduction or contribution. These prompts are advice only. Nothing is saved without your click, and none of them stops you from saving.
When you assign a 401(k)-type deduction. If the deduction has a linked employer contribution that the employee does not have yet, you see Assign the Matching Employer Contribution?
- Click Set up the contribution to open the employee's contribution screen with the match pre-filled. Review it and save.
- Click Skip for now to go back to the deduction list without a match.
When the employee already gets a match from another plan. For example, an employee in both a 401(k) and a Roth 401(k) under one company match. The prompt says that only the remaining match applies, not the full company match, and pre-fills that smaller amount.
When you change the employee's deduction percentage. If the stored match formula no longer fits the new percentage, you see Adjust the Matching Employer Contribution? with a table of each plan's current formula and the suggested change. Click Adjust to apply every listed change, or Skip for now to leave the match as it is. After an adjustment, the save message adds "The employer match has been adjusted accordingly."
When a match pays more than the plan formula. Saving an employee contribution that would pay more than the company match allows shows This Exceeds the Company Match. It gives the total the employer would pay as a percent of pay, how much too much that is, and a suggested formula.
- Use suggested formula: saves the suggested formula instead of yours. This button appears only when UZIO has a suggestion.
- Save anyway: saves your formula unchanged. Use this when the higher match is deliberate.
- Cancel: returns you to the form without saving.
When the match is already used up. Adding a new contribution when the other plans already use the whole company match shows Match Limit Already Consumed. Click Yes to discard the new contribution, or No to save it anyway.
Note: If the match adjustment fails, UZIO shows "Could not adjust the employer match - please update the contribution manually." Open the employee's contributions and correct the formula yourself.
Expected outcome
Each employee's pension deduction calculates using their own method and amount from the next pay run onward. The pay stub shows the same deduction name for everyone; only the amount differs. Your company-level setup stays a single deduction and contribution pair, which keeps your reports and GL mapping simple.
